Basis
- Outside diameter: IPS sizes use standard iron pipe size ODs (as in ASME B36.10 and ASTM F714); DIPS sizes use ductile iron pipe ODs (as in AWWA C151 and C906). Dimensions are general reference values, not a substitute for the manufacturer's data sheet.
- Minimum wall = OD / DR.
- Average inside diameter = OD − 2.12 × minimum wall (minimum wall plus 6%), the value normally used for flow calculations.
- Minimum-wall inside diameter = OD − 2 × minimum wall (the largest possible bore).
- Pressure rating for water at 73 °F (23 °C): P = 2 × HDS / (DR − 1), with HDS 1000 psi for PE4710 or 800 psi for PE3608. Ratings fall at higher temperatures and with surge; check manufacturer and project requirements.
